Everything passes; Love remains.

the woman
carried herself
like God
worshipped her body.

even the devil
will pray for forgiveness
at the holy sight
of her.

A black man rides a bus restricted to whites only, in Durban. In an act of resistance to South Africa’s apartheid policies, 1986.

look at their faces. upset that this black man dared to exist in their space

It’s sad how terrified he looks.

the fear in his eyes man :/

not even “their space”. Europeans invaded South Africa, separated Black people from their own country and dared to be aghast at their want to considered humans. This was just 28 years ago, guys!!

“Don’t you know how sweet and wonderful life can be?” ― Marvin Gaye

"But don’t forget that memory is like salt: the right amount brings out the flavor in food, too much ruins it. If you live in the past all the time, you’ll find yourself with no present to remember."

It’s been a month since the start of the school year and today was the first day for one of the students in my cohort. I asked him about his whereabouts to which he replied “I just got out of jail.” It is stories like this that reenforce my reasons to why I serve. Too many of our youth have lost hope, they’ve become lost souls. They know that racial disparity or generational poverty will hinder them from reaching their maximum potential. They’re aware of society’s perception of them, their families, their friends. And they need us. To my students: I am a product of this same public school system and I serve to empower you. It’s been a month since the start of the school year and I look forward to this journey with you.
